Basic:Different Liptick Finishes (EN)

Today’s post contains basic information about the different lipstick finishes, their pros and cons and which effect they achieve on the lips.  I also want to mention that the lip shade looks different when applied on the lips, because it depends of the natural lip color. Usually when the lips are pale the color of the lipstick looks like in the bullet but when the lips are naturally pigmented the lipstick color shows up different and darker. Keep in mind this when you are picking a lipstick so you won’t become disappointed. ☺

Here are the different lipstick finishes:

Sheer finish– light pigmentation, poor longevity, it feels really comfortable on the lips, it doesn’t exaggerate any imperfections on the lips. Usually the lipsticks with sheen finish have balm consistency and are really easy to apply (without need of mirror and lip pencil). The balm type sheer lipsticks go really well with all kinds of makeup – everyday, colourful, heavy smokey and etc.

 Satin finish – higher pigmentation compared to the sheer lipsticks, better longevity, comfy feeling on the lips. Usually they have slight shine and don’t exaggerate the imperfections on the lips. Easy to apply and again, easy to combine with all type of makeup.

Pearl finish – really good to full pigmentation, easy application, comfy feeling on the lips. Pearly lipstick exaggerate every dry spot on your lips and makes it really visible. They have good longevity. When you wear a pearly lipstick go for a matte eye makeup just so it looks not too much pearliness.

Creamy finish – really good color payoff with no shimmer added, slight glossy sheen and really good longevity. It feels a bit thicker on the lips and you have to be careful when applying on the lips. The lighter creamy shades exaggerate the imperfections on the lips. The creamy finish lipsticks go well with more intensive makeup/eyeliner. The creamy finish is my personal favourite and almost all of my lipsticks are creamy.

Matte finish – maximal pigmentation, maximal longevity. The matte lipstick feel a bit heavy on the lips. The matte lipsticks are usually really dry and exaggerate absolutely every dry spot or dead skin on the lips. You have to be careful when applying and its good to use a lip pencil. The matte lips are not comfy for everyday use because they are really drying.  Depending on the shade you can go for a matte lipstick & heavy smokey eyes makeup or matte lipstick & black cat eye is absolutely classic look. The matte lipsticks aren’t suitable for a light everyday makeup because it makes it more official.

Overall those are the basic lipstick finishes. Of course there are much more but they are similar to the basic finishes (for example MAC’s lipsticks have finishes like an amplified creme, retro matt and etc.)
